BW Gas was one of the leading companies who fronted the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code. The International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) established the ISPS code which came into effect on 1 July 2004. The code contains rules and requirements for carriers and terminals to significantly improve vessel and port security against international terrorism. All vessels have a Ship Security Officer who maintains a shipboard security plan as laid out by the shore office. Access control is a major part of this plan. All visitors to the vessel need to be entered in the approved list made out by the Master and the agent prior to the vessel's arrival. Visitors will then be registered in the Terminal Security Gate and in the visitors log. A guard is always on duty when the vessel is in port to make sure no unauthorised personnel can board the vessel.
