BW Gas pays great attention to the issue of personal safety and safety awareness among its crew, covered in the TQM system. However, the Loss Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) still showed that there were room for improvements.

Instead of setting up more regulations, it was decided to try a different, more playful approach. This gave birth to Buddy the cat, a feisty feline who have been sailing on the seven seas for a long time, and who had learned seamanship from crew on many different vessels. Now he travels around on BW vessels, giving out his wisdom and ending every discussions with his famous quote:".. cos you ain't got nine lives, buddy!"

Since the start of the campaign in late 2003, the company has experienced a significant improvement in the LTIF, from 3.1 in 2003 to 1.5 in 2004. And the cat keeps on going!
