BW Gas places substantial emphasis on crisis management training to ensure safe operations at sea. Simulator based training gives the officers an opportunity to gain experience in handling critical situations and working as an effective team. To ensure that the officers are offered quality courses with optimal utilization, BW Gas has invested in a full-scale bridge simulator, the B/S Berge Bridge, at the Ship Manoeuvring Simulator Centre (SMS) in Trondheim, Norway. With the contribution from BW Gas, the centre is able to offer the course participants training in combined scenarios, where bridge teams from different cultures work in the same situations. An example of a combined scenario can be two tankers in a lightering operation where two simulator teams work in the same setting. An important purpose of the SMS courses is to provide training in procedures related to OPA90 (Oil Pollution Act) and SMPEP (Shipboard Marine Pollution and Environment Protection).
