LPG transportation

BW Gas has transported gas since the mid 1960’s. The company has gradually developed into the world’s leading independent owner and operator of large gas carriers.

The market for LPG transportation can be divided into several sub-segments, of which BW Gas is involved in four.

The company is a large player in the Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC, 70,000+ cbm) market. These vessels carry predominantly LPG (propane and butane), but can to some extent also carry CPP (clean petroleum products), over large distances, the most important trade being from the Arabian Gulf to the Far-East.

The company is also a significant player in the market for Large Gas Carriers  (LGCs, 50,000-70,000 cbm) predominantly carry LPG and ammonia but can also carry chemical gasses. Ammonia is transported by both larger and medium-sized vessels.

In the Medium Gas Carrier segment (MGCs, 20,000-40,000 cbm), the company's vessels are operated by Exmar, the largest player in this segment. These vessels trade in both LPG and ammonia. BW Gas ASA operates some of these vessels in the North Sea, in a sub-pool to the Exmar pool.

BW Gas is also involved in a small number of smaller semi-refrigerated vessels (8,000-20,000 cbm) through part-ownership. The vessels are operated in a pool managed by AP Møller. These vessels operate mainly Transatlantic, Black Sea to USG.

Customers for LPG and ammonia are typically large international gas companies, and contracts are either for single voyages or fixed for periods of up to three years.
