LNG transportation

BW Gas has been involved in LNG shipping since the early 1980’s.

In 2000, it was decided to expand the company's LNG activities in order to take advantage of low newbuilding prices and expected growth in LNG transportation. Consequently, the company contracted a 138,000 cbm LNG carrier. During the next year, BW Gas contracted two subsequent sister vessels, one at a time upon securing long term contracts for the previous vessel. The first two vessels were chartered to Suez LNG for 20 years service. Sonatrach, Algeria’s state owned energy giant, chartered the third vessel for 20 years.

In 2001, Bergesen d.y. ASA was awarded four ships under Nigeria LNG’s tender for train four and five. Two years later, an additional four vessels were awarded under NLNG's train six to Bergesen LNG Ltd., a sister company of BW Gas. These four vessels are managed by BW Gas.

The first vessel for train four and five, LNG River Orashi, was delivered in November, 2004. LNG Enugu and LNG Oyo were delivered late in 2005 and LNG Benue in March 2006. The vessels have a capacity of approximately 145,000 cbm and were built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering at Okpo in South Korea. In November 2006, LNG Lokoja was the first of four 148,500 cbm vessles delivered from DSME for NLNG's train 6 vessels.

Suez LNG Trading awarded BW Gas two 20-year time charter contracts in 2005. The two 162,400 cbm vessels will be used by Suez LNG Trading to serve their 20-year contract with Yemen LNG. The dual fuel, diesel electric LNG carriers will be delivered from Daewoo Shipyard in May 2009.
